2nd week preview RG- ProTennisCoach.com
"Ok we made it through the fun filled first week- and still lots of great tennis ahead. I am loving the possibilities on the Women's side. So many young new exciting faces, this could be a springboard for tomorrow's great players. I am going young! I am biased and obviously so happy Sloane is doing well and waiting for more to come. Besides Sloane, Tolmjanovic, Bouchard, Halep, Muguruza all look terrific to me. I’m also thrilled to see Andrea Petkovic back to her winning ways after battling through some injuries.
The second week becomes more about handling pressure and the situation & less about the tennis. The most poised and mature players tend to find ways to win. The talent level obviously matters, but now we are down to the last 16, so all these women can play! Who will deal with the adversity, who will grab the opportunity and rise to the occasion? These are the big questions and these are the defining points that make good players great or keep good players from becoming great. The youngsters have youthful exuberance on their side, and the older players have experience. It will be interesting to see who handles the environment the best.
Now that Genie Bouchard has won she will have to deal with the clay court experience of Suarez Navarro , who got past Tomljanovich. Sharapova did a good job to get past Stosur and is now the clear tournament favorite. Now Maria will face young Muguruza who has done a good job keeping her momentum after defeating Serena.
Sloane has done great her first 3 matches and has a big ask against Halep. Halep has been arguably the most consistent player in the last 8 months, outside of Serena. Sloane will be ready and it will be a great challenge and opportunity for her.
You know who I am picking!
I think that Kuznetsova will be waiting in the quarter finals. Her experience and guile will get her past Safarova. On the bottom I see Jelena Jankovic’s good tennis continuing and her beating Errani and she will meet with the winner of Bertens – Petkovic. My pick is Petkovic to play in the bottom quarter final agains Jelena, which will be an intriguing match up. Lets leave the women's predictions at that; and see what develops the next couple of days!
Women's predicted quarter final draw:
Muguruza vs Sharapova - done
Suarez Navarro vs Bouchard - done
Kuznetsova vs Stephens
Jankovic vs Petkovic
The men have some enticing match ups for week 2 as well! Andy Murray did a good job to get past Kohlschreibe in a two day marathon. He will play Verdasco who got past Gasquet in straight sets. This will be an interesting rematch from last years Wimbledon 5 set battle where Andy prevailed. Different time, different surface- should be a great battle. I see Garcia Lopez beating Monfils. Gael, used up too much energy getting past Fognini. Ferrer will get past Anderson and Rafa will stop Lahovic’s nice run here in Roland Garros. So I believe we will see Rafa vs. Ferrer & G. Lopez vs Murray in the top quarter final matches. Berdych did a good job handling John Isner in Staight sets. Gulbis played one of the best matches of his professional career beating Roger in 5 sets. It is quite an accomplishment to sustain that level for 5 sets against Roger. It was a great battle and Ernst showed some terrific maturity. That has set up Gulbis vs. Berdych. Novak was all over Tsonga. That was a routine match. I was disappointed to see Jo so flat from the beginning of the match & Novak gave him no room to breath, a terrific performance from Djokovic. Raonic did a good job handling Granollers in straight sets & now gets to see if he has the firepower to take out Novak in the quarter finals.
Men's predicted quarter final draw:
Nadal vs Ferrer
Lopez vs Murray
Berdych vs Gulbis - done
Raonic vs Djokovic- done
There is much to be decided but that is how I see things leading into the quarter finals and beyond. Lot’s of exciting things still to come!
